RAILROADS CONQUER THE WORLD
The railroad was invented before the age of steam. An English inventor of the «iron horse» was George Stephenson whose «Rocket» ran at a speed 35 miles an hour and his first public railroad, the Stockton and Darlington, a distance of about 20 miles {32 kilometers) was opened in 1825. It was the first railroad to run steam freight trains on a regular schedule. Stephenson's second railroad, opened in 1830 ran 30 miles (48 km) from Liverpool to Manchester. It was the first railroad to run steam passenger trains on a regular schedule.
By the mid-1800 other countries also had steam-powered railroads. During the. late 1800’s and early 1900’s, thousands of steam trains made their way across the U.S. countryside, carrying most of the nation’s freight and long distance passengers. The first railroad across western North America was completed in 1869 and so helped open the American West to settlers.
Nowadays, the railroads surround our Earth with many bonds. The railroad has opened up new countries and connected them with the rest of the world, it has founded new cities and populated waste lands; and this has been achieved in spite of the fact that the railroad is neither simple in construction, nor easy in maintenance. There are many obstacles: swamps and deserts, watercourses and snow, high mountains and deep valleys, but the difficulties are overcome for the benefit of man.
The railroads are developing and remain great and vital arteries of national and international economic life.
